Hello extraordinary humans,I’ve got 2 great workshops coming up this month in Vancouver: Shoulder Play - August 17th at 6pm And Beyond the Exhale - I’ll be teaching this exercise in both of them: Why? Because your shoulder mechanics and your breathing mechanics are incredibly linked. This exercise looks at getting better rib cage expansion, specifically through the posterior chain, an area that is usually pretty locked down and compressed. When this compression occurs we run into a few things: 1) the landscape on which our shoulder blade glides changes and it becomes more difficult for it to slide and glide which in turn changes how hard our shoulder muscles need to work in order to keep things safe, stable and strong. If you’ve every struggles with serratus activation, rock back may be a huge tool for your shoulder kit. 2) we lose access to full inhales and exhales which can change our endurance, resilience to stress and…our ability to expand our rib cage creating a little cycle of compression, tension and general ugh. (Technical, I know) Rock back and its many variations is a nice exercise to add to your cool’ down, warm up or throughout the day as a movement snack. Changing the texture and size of the object you round over will change where you feel resistance and openings in your breath. As will playing with side bending or arm position. Now on to these details of the workshops! Each workshop costs $45 - Beyond the Exhale is moved to the fall, date TBC Shoulder Play August 17th:6pm at Fitness Science Corp 369/379 terminal avenue Vancouver. 1.5 hour class exploring mobility, stability, strength and coordination of the shoulder for aerial, acrobatic or other creative work. We will be playing with improving scapular movement and stability and creating stability in the shoulder joint through strength and conditioning so it can roll and glide more effectively. You do not need any previous training experience and if you have an injured shoulder, you can absolutely come and do what is accessible to you. Modifications are always available. A creative perspective on training, pain, and performance
Hello extraordinary humans, This month I am celebrating a real measurable milestone in my concussion recovery: I can now “happily” maintain a heart rate for 130BPM on a stationary bike for 25 minutes. It’s honestly huge deal and something that I am incredibly proud of. Towards the end of last summer, I unofficially stopped training. Not just aerial, not just things that hurt, EVERYTHING. My exercise intolerance and fatigue from the concussion were too extreme and I was constantly crashing and...
Hello extraordinary humans, Three months ago I was told by my doctor that it was time to start “being realistic” about my recovery from this concussion. I think it’s obvious to state that I was not pleased with her suggestion (and yes, I very politely pushed back - more on that below.) After the conversation I immediately called my mom and declared: “I don’t want to be realistic, I want to be delusional!” The thing is, I have never gotten anything I have ever wanted by just being realistic....
Hello extraordinary humans, Let’s talk tempos in training! I’ve been programming these a lot lately for a ton of different reasons and I want to share the magic and fun (I’m told I use this word wrong) of tempos with all of you! I’ll be honest, I am usually the only person in the gym excited about tempos because they are…well…often unpleasant. However, that unpleasantness speaks to the myriad of training adaptations they can support and the wide range of fitness levels they can accommodate so...
